What are PDO Threads?
PDO threads are strings of an absorbable material that are placed by a needle just beneath the surface of the skin. Once in place, the threads lift sagging skin, plump areas that have begun to hollow, and smooth over fine lines and folds. The threads also stimulate the body’s production of rejuvenating collagen. Many patients use Medyglobal and Promoitalia threads as a non-surgical alternative to a facelift. Others use them to extend the results of a previous facelift. Threads are a popular option for patients seeking facial rejuvenation, but they can also be used elsewhere on the body. They can be used to tighten loose skin on the stomach or lift crepey skin on the shoulders or upper arm. They can also be used on the scalp to encourage hair growth.
What are PDO Threads made of?
Medyglobal and Promoitalia threads are both made of polydioxanone, which is a surgical suture material that safely dissolves into the body roughly nine months after the threads are placed. Medyglobal and Promoitalia threads are available with small arms or barbs along the length of the thread. Threads with arms help the thread hook into the skin from beneath and lift it. Both Medyglobal and Promoitalia threads are imported from Europe and are FDA approved.
How does this treatment work?
The placement of threads is a simple, in-office treatment. We’ll numb the skin in the treatment zone, and we may make a few light marks on the skin that we’ll use as reference points as the threads are placed. We’ll use a needle filled with polydioxanone to place a string of the material just beneath and parallel to the surface of the skin. The treatment can take anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on where it is performed. For most patients, the skin is immediately lifted by the placement of the thread. Your results will continue to improve over the next six weeks as your body responds by producing more collagen. By the time the threads dissolve, a new lattice of collagen will have formed that will take the thread’s place in supporting the skin.
Should I set aside time for recovery?
There is very little downtime associated with this easy treatment. Most patients return immediately to their regular schedules.
How long will my results last?
PDO Threads offer long-lasting results. Patients often enjoy their results for a year or more. To preserve your results, you can have touch-up threads placed every year.
Can I combine this treatment with others?
Yes. Many of our PDO Thread patients opt to incorporate dermal fillers, botulinum toxin injections, and other cosmetic services into their treatment plans. We can work with you to create a treatment plan that will help you turn back the clock on your appearance.
